Also, because I work in a large, urban district and my classes are comprised of low-income, minority students. I have worked extensively teaching inservice and preservice middle school teachers and, on a more limited basis, with secondary teachers. Consequently I've been around many dilemmas and challenges myself and have, at least, opinions on what works and what doesn't with this audience. In addition, I have some experience presenting case studies to teachers. We used the Improving Instruction series from the Teachers College Press with Chicago Public School teachers.

As always, I hope to gain insight into improving my own teaching.

In a broader view, I am also involved in programming for events centered on undergraduate math and science education for college and university faculty through the MER Forum and the Chicago Symposium Series. I am always looking for new people and projects to enrich these events.

For the past five years, I have been working closely with the Office of Math and Science of the Chicago Public Schools, particularly on an initiative to prepare middle schools to offer a 9th-grade algebra course to well-prepared students in their schools. What I might be able to contribute to this workshop is what we have learned about the dilemmas and challenges related to this initiative and this audience (urban middle school teachers). In my research, I examine the knowledge of student thinking that mathematics graduate students have and how that relates to what they do as they plan for and enact instruction in calculus courses.
